Choosing the perfectly sized bathroom vanity

When it comes to choosing the perfect sized bathroom vanity cabinet – be it the main, guest or even a smaller kid’s bathroom – a number of factors need to be taken into consideration.

Too often, these are forgotten as we ultimately obsess over how the vanity cabinet looks and how it will complement the overall look of the bathroom. Let’s take a look at the other considerations that should form part of your decision when replacing a vanity.

Plumbing

Perhaps the most important aspect of selecting a new bathroom vanity is the plumbing fixtures in the bathroom itself. Unless you are planning on moving it, no simple task, the location of your plumbing goes a long way in deciding on your new vanity cabinet in terms not only style but size as well.

Bathroom size and shape

Next, you need to consider the size and shape of the bathroom. Spatial restrictions will affect your decision in choosing a vanity cabinet, its size as well as its shape. In smaller bathrooms, a corner unit can be used to overcome a lack of space.

Depth of your vanity cabinet

Always remember to take into account the depth of your cabinet. If it is to be placed near any other existing bathroom fixtures such as a toilet or a shower, be sure to check that it leaves enough space to maneuver easily around without bumping into and protruding pieces. Don’t forget the counter top of the vanity will be its widest point as this overlaps the rest of the unit.

Height of your vanity cabinet

The height of your bathroom vanity unit is important. This is especially true of units that are hung from the wall. This also can vary from bathroom to bathroom.

In your main bathroom, consider units around 36 inches high. This is the standard height of most counters found in your house, for example, your kitchen.

As the name suggests, a guest bathroom will accommodate guests of varying heights. Here the best level to have a vanity cabinet is around 32 inches. This will allow children to reach the basin with relative ease.

Lastly, if they are lucky enough, your children may have their own bathroom. Of course, a vanity cabinet placed here should be far lower – around 30 inches should do the trick.

Vanity type

Armed with the above information, you can begin to narrow down your vanity type. Let’s take a look at a few options.

  • Double vanity cabinet

A double vanity cabinet takes up a lot of space, but these are ideal for large master bathrooms. A double vanity has many advantages including enough area for double basins as well as plenty of storage space.

  • Single vanity cabinet

If you do not have enough space for a double vanity cabinet, a single unit is the next best. These can be used in smaller master bathrooms or guest bathrooms. If space is restricted, you could place two separate small vanity cabinets next to each other to give the impression of a double-sized piece. Save even more space by opting for a hanging version that mounts on your wall.
